Quisiera vivir cerca al mar.

Ser océano.

Ballena migrante en invierno.

Coral en verano.

Quisiera que la brisa costeña me golpeara la cara por las mañanas.

Enterrar mis pulgares en la arena.

Llenar de poquitos de playa toda la casa.

Arena en los calcetines, en la cabeza, en las uñas.

Arena en la comida, en la crema de manos.

Ser ola que revienta en el acantilado.

Pájaro de patas enjutas.

Quisiera, dentro de estos quereres vastos y ambiguos, sentirme más cerca de mi hermana, que me está observando al otro lado del océano.

Quisiera saber cuántos kilómetros hay de una orilla a otra y cuánto tiempo me tomaría llegar nadando.

Claro, cómo si pudiera nadar tantos días.

Cómo si pudiera nadar y punto.

No he metido la cabeza completa al océano después de aquel año de repetidas infecciones de oído y visitas al hospital.

Y, aun así,

Quisiera vivir cerca al mar.

A migrating whale in winter.

Coral in summer.

I wish the coastal breeze would hit my face in the mornings.

Bury my thumbs in the sand.

Fill the whole house with little bits of beach.

Sand in my socks, in my hair, under my nails.

Sand in my food, in my hand cream.

Be a wave that breaks against the cliff.

A bird with wiry legs.

I wish, within these vast and ambiguous longings, I could feel closer to my sister, who is watching me from the other side of the ocean.

I wish I knew how many kilometres there are from one shore to the other, and how long it would take me to swim there.

As if I could, of course, swim for that many days.

As if I could swim at all.

I haven’t put my whole head underwater since that year of recurring ear infections and hospital visits.

And yet, I wish I could live near the sea.
