The sun was rising when his alarm sounded. The suitcase was nearly complete, breakfast postponed, and the house laid in stillness as Olga quietly contemplated her handiwork. She began drawing the zipper shut when the tap burst open, making her flinch. She lifted her gaze and saw him in the mirror standing behind her, the belt in one hand, the coffee in the other.
Olga shook herself off, dragged her heavy burden down the corridor and placed it by the front door. Soon the garbage truck would arrive, and she’d be safe.
Today, her husband wouldn’t go to work.
